For Spring/Summer 2020, IAM MAI introduces a collection inspired by the simplicity of structure. The graphic lines of a staircase defines ‘Experiment 9’, where the sequence of stairs is reflected through the creative use of pleating. Shot at the dynamic location of Al Safa Art and Design Library, a platform that stems far beyond a traditional library, IAM MAI’s SS’20 collection exudes unconventional styles procured from traditional silhouettes.
Merging structure with shadows is portrayed through the art of pleating fused with asymmetrical patterns in pleated light taffeta. Meanwhile, playing with the way the sunlight falls on structured elements is brought out with metallic dotted chiffon in matte and glossy finish. A strong colour palette featuring earthy tones of stone and black is fused with delicate shades of white, light blue and faded pink. While introducing a glaze-effect silk blend organza emphasising the clarity of each design.
Voluminous culottes, skirts and tops feature hints of tonal dressing while double layer dresses are introduced for a feminine touch. Experimenting with minimal colour blocking, unique details lie in Mai’s incorporation of hidden belts and pleated sleeves. Experiment 9 reflects a crisp aesthetic focusing on effortless silhouettes complementing a sense of understated poise.
