A luxurious dining affair was what AMS experienced at Al Nahham – complete with stunning Doha views.
The entrance to Al Nahham, at Banana Island Resort Doha, was a sight to behold, the design is inspired by a traditional Arabian village, featuring thatched roofs, white stone walls and Arabic patterned tiles and carvings. Al Nahham incorporates dhow-inspired elements that celebrate Qatar’s cultural identity and connection to its maritime history. It creates a sense of place that honours tradition while embracing modernity. The path leading up to the restaurant is lined with lush greenery, dotted with intricately designed lanterns that cast a warm, inviting glow. As we stepped inside, the interior was equally captivating: high wooden ceilings with exposed beams, a central feature adorned with aquariums on either side and expansive windows framing the breathtaking view of the Arabian Gulf. The blend of natural materials and tasteful décor instantly created a tranquil yet sophisticated vibe, preparing us for the sensory delight that awaited – an Arabic cuisine feast!
On entering, we were greeted by the warm and attentive staff, and Bhanu, our server, guided us to our table, which overlooked the glittering cityscape. The restaurant’s ambience seamlessly blended modern elegance with traditional Arabic touches, creating an atmosphere that was both elegant and welcoming.
A Mezze to Remember
Our culinary journey began with an impressive array of cold mezze. The selection included a velvety and buttery hummus that was perfectly balanced in texture and flavour, accompanied by warm, freshly baked bread that was ideal for dipping. The assortment of olives provided a delightful briny contrast, while the crispy falafel balls were golden brown on the outside and wonderfully moist within. A standout among the starters was the French beans, which were tender and seasoned to perfection, showcasing the kitchen’s attention to even the simplest of dishes.
Succulent Shrimp
Following the cold mezze, we were treated to deep-fried shrimp. These succulent crustaceans were encased in a light, crispy batter that gave way to juicy, perfectly cooked meat inside. The accompanying dipping sauce complemented the shrimp beautifully, adding an extra layer of flavour to each bite.
To accompany our meal, we opted for one of the restaurant’s signature mocktails. The Al Nahham Song was a refreshing blend of watermelon, rose water, mint, lemon and sugar syrup. It captured the essence of summer and paired wonderfully with our seafood dishes.
Sumptuous Seafood
For our main course, we indulged in the seafood platter, which was truly a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The platter featured an assortment of grilled and fried seafood, each piece cooked to perfection. The variety allowed us to sample different flavours and textures, from delicate white fish to rich, meaty cuts. The presentation was stunning, with the seafood artfully arranged and garnished with fresh herbs and lemon wedges.
Bhanu told us the story behind the restaurant’s name. Al Nahham pays tribute to the rich maritime heritage of Qatar and the Arabian Gulf region. The name refers to the traditional singers, known as Nahham, who played a crucial role in the pearl diving and fishing expeditions of the past. These singers were responsible for motivating and entertaining the crew during long sea voyages, helping them endure harsh conditions and maintain their positive spirits. The name reflects not only the cultural significance of fishing and diving but also an appreciation for the flavours and experiences tied to the sea. It suggests a focus on fresh, locally sourced seafood and dishes inspired by the region’s culinary traditions.
Luscious Lamb
Chops As if the meal couldn’t get any better, we were then served a plate of perfectly grilled lamb chops. The meat was tender and full of flavour, with a beautiful char that spoke to the skill of the grill master. The lamb was accompanied by a selection of grilled vegetables that provided a light counterpoint to the richness of the meat.
Throughout our dinner, the service was impeccable. Our waiters, Bhanu and Thushara, were knowledgeable about the menu and attentive without being intrusive. Their pride in the restaurant and its offerings was evident in the way they described each dish and ensured our glasses were never empty. Their professionalism and warmth significantly enhanced our dining experience.
A Vibrant Evening
As the evening progressed, Al Nahham Restaurant came to life, creating an enchanting scene. The dining room buzzed with lively energy, hosting an eclectic mix of patrons that showcased the venue’s broad appeal. Couples enjoyed intimate dinners, their quiet conversations punctuated by soft laughter. Nearby, vivacious family gatherings filled the air with warmth and joy as children marvelled at the sight of beautifully presented dishes. At sleek tables near the windows, groups of businessmen engaged in animated discussions over their meals, clearly impressed by both the cuisine and the setting.
A Sweet Conclusion
We concluded our feast with a simple yet satisfying dessert of chocolate ice cream. The smooth, rich ice cream was the perfect sweet note to end our meal, providing a cool contrast to the warm evening air. As we lingered over the last bites, we couldn’t help but marvel at the spectacular view of Doha’s skyline once more. The twinkling lights of the city provided a magical backdrop to what had been a truly memorable dining experience.
From the stunning views and elegant ambience to the exquisite food and impeccable service, every element came together to create memorable experiences. Whether you are a local looking for a special night out or a visitor wanting to experience the best of Doha’s culinary scene, Al Nahham is a must-visit destination that exemplifies the height of Arabian hospitality and gastronomic excellence in Doha.
