It’s difficult for one to say ‘The Gift of Kings’ and not imagine the glitz and glamour, our minds immediately wondering what it would be like to be gifted such a treasure.
A dreamy notion for the romantics but I wanted to explore the birth of this statement in relation to one particular House, Amouage.
Born in the Sultanate of Oman, Amouage is an international luxury fragrance House renowned for creating some of the most finely crafted perfumes in the world. Yet, the story of Amouage cannot be unraveled without delving into the reason of its birth in 1983.
Over a decade after the start of its Renaissance in 1970, Oman was fast becoming a land of peace, friendship and hospitality. As such, the House’s founder had gone to the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said with a proposition to create a brand that would introduce Oman’s fragrance heritage to the world, speaking of its treasures, the finest quality frankincense from Dhofar, the scentful rock rose from Al Hajar mountains, and the valuable ambergris from the Sea of Oman. A brand that would become His Majesty’s gift to his guests, and therein ‘The Gift of Kings’ was born.
Receiving his Majesty’s blessings, the world-acclaimed ‘nose’ Guy Robert was commissioned to create ‘Gold’, the House’s debut fragrance, and Robert’s career-crowning creation. Using Oman’s three greatest natural treasures – Frankincense, Rose and Ambergris – together with over 120 rare and high-quality ingredients sourced from around the world, Gold released layer after layer of Oriental notes reminiscent of the great couture fragrances of the 1930s.
Today, over 35 years later, Amouage is considered an icon in the fragrance world with a repertoire of over 50 unrivalled perfumes.
