Parfums de Marly’s contemporary new fragrance, Palatine is sophisticated, delicate yet radiant and, also, audacious as it takes inspiration from a colourful 17th-century personality.
Palatine is a fragrance that dabbles in various shades of violet, from violet petal to lavandin.
A blend of raw materials and new-gen technology, it is a declaration to all who fearlessly embrace their singularity.
And it is a dash of insolence in Haute Parfumerie, created in the image of the princess who inspired it: Elizabeth Charlotte of Bavaria, aka ‘La Palatine’.
She was an enlightened, free spirit and a leading figure at the Château de Marly – a royal residence for King Louis XIV of France.
An intimate friend of Louis XIV, whose brother she married, the Princess Palatine radiated self-confidence and an independence uncommon for a woman of her rank and era.
Steadfastly refusing to conform to the gaze of others and to the conventions of the French royal court, she blossomed, particularly at Marly to which only the king’s closest friends were invited.
Her unconventional manner and impertinence left a strong impression on her contemporaries.
“Princess Palatine was an atypical, offbeat personality,” said Julien Sprecher, founder and artistic director of Parfums de Marly.
“There’s something radically modern about her that reminds me of how today’s liberated young women dare to stand up for themselves just as they are.
“To celebrate that audacity, I wanted to revisit the violet petal, a note that tends to be perceived as traditional, and make it the heroine of a composition that is, on the contrary, quite contemporary and unexpected.”
Lavandin
With its aromatic, lightly camphorated and floral notes, lavandin is a hybrid of two varieties of lavender, discovered purely by chance during harvest time in Provence in the early 20th century. It is actually the result of the natural hybridisation, due to cross-pollination, between broadleaved or ‘spike’ lavender (lavandula latifolia) and true lavender (lavandula angustifolia).
The lavandin essence used in Palatine favours a sensation of well-being, accompanied by the surprising eruption of fougère, a typically masculine accord, in the heart of a resolutely feminine perfume.
Violet Petal
Associating the finest ingredients with the latest technological advances gives Palatine unprecedented modernity and exceptional hold, from morning to night.
The violet petal note was captured by Headspace using Firmenich’s exclusive Natureprint technology. This technique, reserved for the rarest and most sensitive ingredients, makes it possible to reproduce all the flower’s natural subtlety and freshness without having to pick it, thus preserving its ecosystem.
Palatine’s violet petal is interpreted with a slightly sweet, tart note, giving it a mischievous, gourmand allure.
